Copper mining anchors Bayard. Freeport-McMoRan's Chino operation at Santa Rita and the Tyrone mine to the southwest employ across the Mining District, and mine wages set the top of the local pay scale. Health care, public schools, and retail in and around Silver City, about 10 miles west, fill out the rest of the job base.
