What Factors Into My Rankings

Many elements go into dynasty rankings, but I primarily weigh the following...

  • Current/Recent Performance
  • Expected future short-term performance
  • Expected future long-term performance
  • Profile/metrics analysis
  • Durability
  • Team Context (it matters a little bit)

Dynasty Rankings Notes

Bobby Witt Jr. (SS - KCR)

After another major injury to Ronald Acuna Jr., we have a new No. 1 this month and his name is Robert Andrew Witt Jr. or Bobby Barrels if you're feeling festive. In 348 plate appearances this season, Witt has racked up 12 home runs, 21 steals, 60 runs, and 53 RBI along with a .311/.359/.531 slash line. Witt's power/speed pace is slightly behind his 30/49 season from 2023, but Witt has more than made up for that by being on pace to set career-best marks in runs, RBI, AVG, OBP, and SLG. On top of that, Witt's Quality of Contact metrics have also ticked up this season.

What else could you ask for? Witt is a five-category fantasy stud at the age of 24 who has consistently improved as a hitter and doesn't have any flaws in the profile. While he's not the unquestioned No. 1 like Acuña was last season, Witt gets the top spot this month and could hold onto it for a while.

Gunnar Henderson (SS - BAL)

If anyone were to take the top spot from Witt, Gunnar Henderson would be one of the prime suspects. After a great 2023 season that made him a universal Top 25 dynasty asset, Henderson is on pace to smash through last year's numbers so far this season. Henderson is currently slashing .279/.378/.597 with 65 runs, 24 home runs, 53 RBI, and 13 steals. He has a legit chance to post a 130/50/110/25 type of season, and if he does, the Witt vs. Henderson debate is going to be a hot one entering 2024, hotter than it already is.

While Henderson's contact skills are a bit below Witt's and he doesn't have the same SB upside, Henderson brings more power and a higher walk rate. This was a tough top tier to crack into, but Henderson has certainly joined the party with his performance over the first three months of the season.

Royce Lewis (3B - MIN)

At this point, Royce Lewis is putting himself in the Top 10 overall discussion. We've only seen Lewis for 75 plate appearances this season, but he's slashing .348/.413/.848, and 10 of those plate appearances have finished with Lewis going yard. For his career, Lewis has already amassed 27 home runs in just 355 plate appearances while hitting .316. And while it's a smaller sample size, Lewis has dropped his strikeout rate from 23% to 16% and improved his walk rate from 8.4% to 10.7%

Royce Lewis, apparently, just can keep getting away with it.

The only real knock on him right now is the lack of track record and the durability concerns. And yes, those are legit concerns, especially the knee issues. But if he can stay healthy, Lewis could be a top-five overall player.

Paul Skenes (SP - PIT)

When it comes to pitchers, the only two options for the title of top dog are Tarik Skubal and Paul Skenes in my eyes. Another dominant start yesterday now gives Skenes a pristine 2.14 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 4.4% walk rate, and a 33.7% strikeout rate in 46.1 innings to open his career.

— Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) June 23, 2024

With a fastball that averages 99.3 mph leading the way, Skenes' five-pitch mix has dominated hitters start after start, and all five offerings currently have a whiff rate above 20%. It's scary to think that there's another level for Skenes to unlock, but I fully believe that to be the case.

Jordan Westburg (2B/3B - BAL)

While everyone focuses on Henderson, Adley Rutschman, and the young prospects, Jordan Westburg is quietly having a highly productive season all around. In 295 plate appearances so far, Westburg has racked up 13 home runs, six steals, and a .277/.330/.513 slash line.

Westburg has run slightly below average contact rates, with a 79.8% zone rate and a 71.2% overall contact rate, but also has a 10.9% barrel rate, 92 mph AVG EV, 48.3% hard-hit rate, and a 92nd percentile sprint speed. He's not elite, but Westburg can do a lot of things well and could settle in as a Top 50 player with dual 2B/3B eligibility.

Garrett Crochet (SP - CHW)

Coming into the season, we had three exciting yet risky southpaws trying to transition from the bullpen to the rotation. Two of them fizzed out quickly, but Garrett Crochet has blossomed into one of the best pitchers in baseball. Crochet currently leads the American League in strikeouts and has a 3.25 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, and 29.5% K-BB rate overall.

All four of Crochet's offerings have a BAA under .250 and both his cutter and slider have a whiff rate above 36%. I'll admit, I was a bit skeptical entering the season, but not anymore. Crochet is firmly in the Top-10 Dynasty SP discussion now.

Jarren Duran (OF - BOS)

It's a travesty that he currently ranks 18th in American League outfield All-Star voting, but Jarren Duran has been a beast for fantasy managers this season. Duran is currently on pace for around 110 runs, 15 home runs, 75 RBI, and 40 steals while having a .289/.353/.483 slash line which is nearly identical to his 2023 slash line. His 85.6% zone rate and 76% overall contact rate are nearly identical as well, while Duran has improved his walk, strikeout, hard-hit, and barrel rates this season.

Evan Carter (OF - TEX)

For now, Evan Carter kept a spot in my Top 100 overall. However, I'm not sure how much longer that will last. There was hope of Carter being a 25/25 caliber player with a solid AVG and high OBP. And that looked to be the case in 2023 when he slashed .306/.413/.645 with five home runs and three steals before helping Texas win the World Series as a rookie.

The 2024 season hasn't been as rosy though as Carter has dealt with back issues and is currently slashing .188/.272/.361 in 162 plate appearances. Carter has also struggled mightily against southpaws so far, hitting .081 in 40 plate appearances with a 40% strikeout rate, and has seen his QoC metrics drop significantly across the board. How much of that was due to his back issues though? I'm willing to buy low here if the price has dropped low enough, but I also have concerns with Carter moving forward.
